Viscous flow forming of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses for industrial products

Properties such as high strength and good corrosion resistance of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are attractive for application to industrial products as structural materials. In addition, it is well known that true Newtonian flow behavior appears in the supercooled liquid region at a suitable strain rate. Therefore, it can be said that BMGs have excellent formability in the supercooled liquid state. In this study, we measured strain rate sensitivity exponent, m, of Zr53Ti5Cu20Ni 10Al12 (at%) in the supercooled liquid region in order to evaluate its formability. The m value was evaluated using Backofen method at 690 K and 700 K. It was found that the m value decreased with increasing strain rate and the maximum values of m were 0.9 at a strain rate of 5.7 xl0 -4 s-1 and temperature of 690 K. On the basis of the experimental m value, we tried to prepare some structural components for aircraft. Forming conditions of an industrial product were determined as a temperature of 690 K and a forming gas pressure of 3.5 MPa. Using these forming conditions, some industrial products were successfully formed according to the shape of female mold.
