The capability of cyclodextrins (CDx's) to accommodate aromatic molecules in their torus-shaped hydrophobic cavity has been known for many years. Addition of CDx's to water which contains organic aggregates helps de-aggregation of these molecules. A problem with using monomeric CDx's is, however, that the solubility of the resultant inclusion complex in water is not necessarily high. Generally, the solubility of the inclusion complex in water is lower than that of the parent CDx itself. In this paper, the authors report that β-CDx-epichlorohydrin polymer (Poly-β-CDx) has indeed properties of high water solubility. Synthesis of this polymer was described as early as 1969, but its use as a de-aggregation agent has not been reported to date. In order to demonstrate its validity, they chose a phthalocyanine and pyrene as molecules which form aggregates in water. The results are compared with those obtained for monomeric β-CDx. It is shown by using pyrene and a phthalocyanine, that β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymer can be used as an efficient de-aggregation reagent for organic molecules in water.
