Vascular resistance during left heart bypass with the implantable Vibrating Flow Pump ventricular assist system

Purpose(s): To compare the effects on peripheral vascular resistance of left heart bypass (LHBP) induced by two non-pulsatile pumps: a) the totally implantable Vibrating Flow Pump (VFP) which works at a high frequency (10-50 Hz), and b) the rotary centifugal pump. Methods: Eight healthy adult goats were used. Total LHBP with apico-descending aortic cannulation and both pumps connected in parallel in the circuit allowed comparison of both pumps in the same animal. Pressures from the left ventricle, both atria and the aorta were recorded, and pump flow was measured proximal to the aortic cannula. Analogue signals were digitized and stored in a computer for off line analysis. Results: The peripheral vascular resistance during centrifugal pump-total LHBP was significantly lower (17.8 ± 5.6 mmHg · min/l vs 22.0 ± 7.6 mmHg · min/l, p = 0.05) than during VFP-total LHBP. Conclusions: The VFP seems to exert less effects on the circulatory regulatory system. It might be potentially more advantageous for use as a totally implantable type artificial heart.
