The ground state of the strongly correlated Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice is studied with the variational Monte Carlo method, which is capable of treating the local correlation exactly. The stability of a singlet liquid state is discussed with changing the electron density and strength of correlation. The effect of frustration is also examined in this context. Finally, the implications of the present calculation are discussed on pure La2CuO4 and La2-x(Sr, Ba)xCuO4.
