Validation and evaluation of controllability in microbubbles in blood flow under ultrasound exposure

Though the improvement of efficiency in ultrasound treatment using microbubble is expected, because microbubbles spread in bloodstream, we have ever reported our attempts for active control of microbubbles in flow by acoustic radiation force in order to increase local concentration. However, the controllability of microbubbles in blood flow is not confirmed. In this study, we prepared the suspension of swine blood and microbubbles, which average diameter is 0.5 μm, to inject the density of suspension of 0.02 μl/ml in a Y-shape artificial blood vessel. Experimental conditions were the central frequency of 5 MHz, flow velocity of 30 mm/s, and maximum sound pressure of 400 kPa-pp, respectively. From the results of brightness variation, we confirmed the possibility to induce microbubbles in blood flow, which showed a weak tendency compared with the condition of saline.
