Land mobile communications in the VHF/UHF bands experience very rapid and deep fading due to multipath propagation in an urban area. The maximum fading rate is as much as 40 Hz in the 800 MHz band, corresponding to 54 km/h vehicular traveling speed which causes annoying impulsive noises in the speech channel. This paper describes the use and effect of a syllabic compandor for 800 MHz band land mobile telephone system. Laboratory tests using a Rayleigh fading simulator have shown much improvement in speech quality for both thermal noise and co-channel interference, as comapred to the case when there is no compandor.
