Ultrafast relaxation dynamics of photoexcitations in one-dimensional conjugated polymers

Ultrafast optical response in conjugated polymers has been investigated by femtosecond absorption spectroscopy. Several nonlinear processes, i.e., hole burning, Raman gain, inverse Raman scattering, and induced-frequency shift, were observed. The formation and relaxation of self-trapped excitons were observed in both polydiacetylenes and polythiophenes. A model of the relaxation process is proposed and the short life of excitons and difference between fluorescent and nonfluorescent polymers are explained.
