Ultrafast dynamics in a series of carotenoids investigated by time-resolved stimulated Raman spectroscopy

Vibrational relaxation in excited states of all-trans-carotenoids has been investigated using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy with resolutions of 250 fs and 25 cm-1. The initially photoexcited 1Bu + state in carotenoids relaxes to the 2Ag- excited state within 1 ps. The 1Bu- excited state is an intermediate state of the relaxation. After the relaxation to the 2A g- state, the excess energy is held in a C=C stretching mode (ν1) and remains longer than several picoseconds in short (mini) carotenes. Vibrational feature of carotenoids is of importance in energy transfer of photosynthesis. Femtosecond time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy is necessary to investigate the initial ultrafast kinetics.
