Microscopic structures of GTA welds were studied. The ferrite morphology is lathy or acicular near the bead surface; lacy, vermicular or skeletal in the central region; and vermicular or globular near the fusion boundary. The local difference in ferrite morphology depends on alloy content and cooling rate. Crystallographic characteristics were examined. In the heat affected zone, the degree of recovery of dislocation substructures reduces with distance from the fusion boundary. The Vickers hardness distribution can be explained by grain size and the dislocation density.
