Three-dimensional calculations using a prismatic unstructured mesh system are carried out for hypersonic flowfields over double-cone geometries. Calculations are first conducted for a laminar nitrogen flow with Mach number of 10. Calculated profiles of the surface pressure coefficient and the Stanton number are compared with the experimental data. It is found that the obtained separated region is comparable in length with that given by the axisymmetric calculation using a fine mesh. The Stanton number profile is found to agree well with the experimental data before the reattachment of the separated region, but fails to give the peak value in the downstream region probably due to the coarse mesh system. Calculation of a hypersonic air flow over a double-cone projectile flying with a small pitch angle is then made. The obtained shock layer thickness in the windward side shows a fair agreement with the experimental data. This flowfield is found to be in thermal nonequilibrium but in chemically nearly frozen.
