Thermodynamic considerations for elimination of Te, Se, Si, Ni and Zn from molten copper by using Na2CO3 slag

In order to estimate the distribution of Te, Se, Si, Ni and Zn between sodium carbonate-based slag and molten copper, the following measurements have been conducted on the thermodynamic properties of the slags containing these impurity oxides at 1423K to 1523K: (1) Electrochemical measurements of activity of NaO0.5-CO2 -XOv/2 slag (X: Te, Se, Si, Ni or Zn) under various partial pressures of CO2, (2) Distribution equilibrium measurements of X between the slag and the molten copper and (3) Solubility measurement of CO2 in the slags. The solubility measurements of Ni-and Zn-oxide in Na2CO3 melt for different CO2 partial pressures have been also done. Finally based on the results, the equilibrium distribution ratios of these elements between the slags and the molten copper have been estimated as a function of partial pressures of CO2 and oxygen and the slag compositions. The effectiveness of the sodium carbonate slag treatment for the elimination of these impurity elements is discussed.
