Deposits having a compositional distribution from C to SiC were fabricated on a graphite substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The thickness of the SiC/C FGM are 0.8 mm and 1.8 mm. Under local heat conditions (heat flux, 5.8 Wm-2). SiC Non FGM(NFGM) suffered cracking under the same conditions and vertical cracking was observed out of heating zone. SiC/C functionally gradient material (FGM) did not suffer cracking and was shown to be superior in thermal shock resistance. The cracking was considered to be due to the hoop tensile stress generated on un-heated surface of the specimen.
