Cardiovascular effects of diltiazem (DL) under halothane (H) anesthesia were compared with those under urethane-chloralose (U-C) anesthesia in dog. Under U-C anesthesia 0.1 mg/kg or 0.3 mg/kg of intravenous DL produced a transient (5 min.) decrease in aortic pressure, systemic vascular resistance, left ventricular pressure and left ventricular dP/dt associated with an increase in cardiac output, Vmax, pulmonary arterial pressure and right atrial pressure without any change in pulmonary vascular resistance. In all cardiovascular indices mentioned above percentage changes produced by DL under H anesthesia were similar in the degree and in the duration to those under U-C anesthesia. Although the degree of percent decrease in heart rate was almost equal in both groups, the duration of decrease in heart rate elicited by DL was longer in the H group than in the U-C group. We, therefore, conclude that the effect of the interaction between DL and H on the cardiovascular system, ecxluding heart rate, is simply additive and independent.
