The tempering of lath martensite in terms of carbide precipitation reactions and the change in matrix structure in Fe-C alloys was investigated. Discontinuous recrystallization with a nucleation and growth of new grains occurred during tempering in ultra-low and low carbon steels. The lath martensite structure in carbon steels was replaced by an equiaxed ferrite at higher temperatures and was quite stable on tempering. The results show that after tempering for 0.6ks, block or packet boundaries become fairly wavy and some equiaxed grains were also observed.
