Correlation of structure and property: Ba₂Mn₂Si ₂O₉ consists of Mn₂O₈ dimers made up of two basaledge-sharing MnO₅ square pyramids. Magnetic measurements show that this material displays a spin-singlet ground state with a large spin gap. The spin-dimer analysis suggests that the origin of the spin gap is likely to arise from a large intra-dimer interaction between the Mn1O5 and Mn ₂O₅ square pyramids.
