Zeolites are a family of hydrated aluminosilicate minerals containing alkali and alkaline earth metals. They are used as some commercially for FCC catalysis in petroleum refining, and as selective molecular adsorbents for pollution abatement. A new process for synthesizing zeolite-A and X from kaolinite activated by dry grinding was studied. The process consisted of grinding of kaolinite and succeeding reaction with NaOH solution at 60°C. Zeolite-A and X could be synthesized from the process under normal pressure. The crystallization of zeolite-A and X was influenced by the activated state of kaolinite, and the formation of zeolite-X was accelerated as the activated state of kaolinite was enhanced. Wet milling of activated kaolinite in NaOH solution promoted the formation of zeolite-X, of which specific surface area became large. Most of the products prepared from the activated samples were zeolites.
