Morphological changes in glassy carbon GC surface induced by low-energy (100 keV) and high-energy (700 keV) N2+ irradiation have been investigated. In case of 700 keV N2+ irradiation, intrinsic macro-pores became larger in size after irradiation to a dose of 6 × 1017 N+/cm2 and a porous surface was formed. However, the surface roughening which originates in polishing scratches was not observed at any doses examined for the high-energy case, in contrast to 100 keV N2+ irradiation. Thus surface morphology of N-irradiated GC depends strongly on the energy (or the projected range) of N ions.
