Study on an innovative fast reactor utilizing hydride neutron absorber

The extension of the control rod ljfe of the Fast Reactor (FR) and the compression of the excess reactivity of the FR core are proposed by adopting the hafnium hydride (HfHx) for control rod material and by using the gadolinium hydride (GdHx) burnable poison (BP)for the reactivity recession, respectively. Our study clarfied that the control rod lfe could be prolonged from one year to 6 years and the excess reactivity of the beginning of the core cycle will be reduced to half and the number of the control rods is also reduced to half by adopting the hydride BP. Some HfHx pellets are fabricated and their resistibility to high temperature environment and the compatibility with sodium in the simulated core environment are confirmed by the experiments. In addition, the irradiation study has also been performed in the Japanese experimental FR "Joyo" and the post irradiation experiments show no remarkable changes after irradiation.
