Structural and magnetic properties of Ni2In type (Mn1-xNix)64-65Sn36-35 compounds

The magnetic and structural properties of (Mn1-xNix)64-65Sn36-35 (0.14 ≤ x < 0.43) have been investigated by X-ray, magnetic and partly by neutron diffraction measurements. The concentration dependence of magnetization σ at T = 77 K and H = 9.5 kOe shows a minimum. The sample of x = 0.334 which has smaller σ shows a cusp at TN = 155 K on the σ-T curve and at lower temperature the magnetic cooling effect is observed suggesting the coexisting of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. The powder neutron diffraction experiments for x = 0.334 showed that the 2(a) site is occupied with Mn, 2(d) site with Ni. excess Mn and vacancy and 2(c) site with Sn. For T < TN, there exists a magnetic unit cell with three times of the chemical one in the c-direction and the spin arrangement is antiferromagnetic.
