Strongylocentrotus intermedius is adapted to cold waters. As with other strongylocentrotids, it feeds mainly on kelp, which also adapted to cold waters. Increased water temperature would have negative impact on the production and recruitment of both the populations. Ecologically and genetically comparative studies of S. intermedius among the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean are needed to conserve population size, sustain fishery production, and develop the aquaculture in the warming ocean.
