Synthesis and characterization of single-crystalline thin films of novel Sr2NiO3 and Sr2CoO phases with a 1D TM-O chain structure in polycrystalline form were analyzed. A 1D electronic structure and a sizable nonlinear optical susceptibility were revealed for Sr2NiO3 by polarized absorption spectroscopy and third-harmonic-generation spectroscopy. Thin films were fabricated on a LaSrAlO4 substrate by a pulsed-laser deposition method employing a KrF excimer laser. Buffer layers of Sr2TiO3 and Sr 2CoO3 films respectively. Reciprocal-space mapping measurements by four-circle XRD were used to characterize the crystalline structure of the optimized single-crystalline Sr2NiO3 and Sr2CoO3 films and Sr2NiO3 exhibited fairly large optical nonlinearity.
