Spin dependent tunneling in granular systems: effects of Coulomb blockade

A study was conducted to investigate tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) and related properties in insulating granular systems, which consist of nanometer-sized magnetic metal particles and insulating matrix. Remarkable enhancement of MR was observed for Co-Al-O granular films at low temperatures. Furthermore, staircase structures appeared in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for a few Co particles at the film surface by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements.
