The authors have been engaged in the development and in vivo and in vitro evaluations of an automatic control system for a left heart assist device with solid state micro sensors (pH, pO//2, pCO//2 and blood pressure). The blood contacting surface is coated with an antithrombogenic material for long-term institution in the circulation. The objectives of the current investigation were to study the effects of the thickness of the coating materials on the sensitivity characteristics of the sensors. In animal experiments, results indicate that the pressure sensors operated well with little sensitivity drop, however, the pH and CO//2 sensors revealed an approximately 50% drop in sensitivity - but within 10% in PHEMA.
