Si-Ca-Al-O COMPOUND COATINGS ON MOLYBDENUM FOR APPLICATION TO FUSION REACTOR FIRST WALL COMPONENTS.

The use of molybdenum protective plates coated with low-Z materials has been proposed in a certain conceptual design for fusion reactors. This investigation is an attempt to improve the thermal stability of rf reactive ion-plated SiC on molybdenum by adding a fraction of Al//2O//3 to the deposit. The coating was fabricated by directly evaporating a Si-Al//2O//3 mixture using an electron gun, with acetylene gas as the carbon source. The deposits were characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy, IR absorption spectroscopy, etc. Thermostability of the deposits up to 1200 degree C under vacuum was found to be excellent. The vaporization rate of Si, however, gradually increassed around 1300 degree C. Thermocycling stability of the coatings in a low pressure hydrogen discharge was also evaluated. These results indicate that, due to the thermal stabilities, Si-C-Al-O deposits may be suitable for fusion reactor coating applications.
