SHG properties of K3Li2-xNb5+xO15+2x single crystals grown by the micro-pulling-down method

Potassium lithium niobate (K3Li2-xNb5+x O15+2x: KLN) has been expected as a hopeful material for SHG blue laser because of its excellent features such as a large nonlinear coefficients, high optical damage resistance, and wide noncritical phase-matching characteristics at room temperature. Applying micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method to crystal growth of KLN overcame the cracks and compositional fluctuations difficulties. This paper studied SHG properties of μ-PD-grown KLN single crystals both along and perpendicular to the growth axis. It was indicated that μ-PD-grown KLN single crystal showed high crystallinity and good transparency. SHG property along the growth axis was well homogenized, but a distribution of phase-matched wavelength was found in the cross-section. SHG efficiency was 0.31%/W for 5-mm chip, which corresponded to 15% of calculated value.
