Roof sheathing wind loads on wood-frame residential houses

Wind loads acting on roof sheathing on typical low-rise, wood-frame houses were examined with respect to a wide range of parameters. The parameters which have significant effect on wind loads acting on roof sheathing were found to be roof shape and upstream terrain. In order to achieve an effective prescriptive standard, it would to be beneficial to discriminate by terrain and roof zone in the case of gable roofs; and by terrain, roof height, and roof slope in the case of hip roofs. Comparison of the measured wind loads with those of ASCE7-10 indicates that ASCE7-10 substantially underestimates the wind loads on roof sheathing for both roof shapes, although to a lesser degree for hip roofs.
