Refining of zirconium and vanadium by hydrogen plasma-arc melting

Removal of the alloying elements such as tin, iron, nickel and chromium from the melts of a zircaloy scrap has been investigated using H2(O to 50%) - Ar plasma-arc melting under an atmospheric pressure and reduced pressures. It is found that the tin and iron contents can be reduced effectively. Removal of them obeys a first order rate law and the removal rates increase with hydrogen content in the plasma gas and with decrease in the pressure. This unique refining effect is to be caused by dissociated and activated hydrogen atoms in a plasma-arc. It has been also confirmed that the hydrogen plasma-arc melting is effective for removal of aluminum and oxygen from a crude vanadium metal produced by the alumino thermical reduction of vanadium oxide.
