Reducing shrinkage defects at hot spots in aluminium squeeze castings

Shrinkage at hot-spots contained within an aluminum alloy squeeze casting has been reduced below the given specification by optimizing the feeding path design and using a squeezing pressure above a critical level. The optimization was assisted by a semi-empirical equation, correlating shrinkage with modulus (V/A), critical solid fraction (fsc) and the solidification shrinkage (β). A satisfactory agreement has been found between the amount of shrinkage predicted by the equation and that found by experiments.
