Recently, numerous diagnostic imaging modalities have been developed in the medical and dental fields. From these, we can acquire much information on primary tumors and metastatic lymph nodes that had been previously unknown. In accordance with the development and progress of these modalities for the diagnosis of oral cancer, the diagnostic precision in determining the size, shape, and extent of invasion into the surrounding tissues, the pathological characteristics, and the tumor-nodes-metastasis staging of the oral cancer is also advancing. We have been interested in these new modalities as estimative pathological diagnostic tools for oral cancers. Therefore, we reviewed the significance of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging, and positron emission tomography for the diagnosis of oral cancer. The accuracy of the evaluation of lymph node metastasis is improving with the use of magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, and positron emission tomography.
