Quasi-periodic Coulomb blockade oscillations in a single-wall carbon nanotube bundle

We provide an explanation for why the Coulomb blockade oscillations observed in bundles of carbon nanotubes can be quasi-periodic rather than random. We propose that strong intemanotube capacitive coupling allows for equal potential energy of charge among the nanotubes in the bundle, even if the charging energies of individual nanotubes differ. Numerical calculations indicate that a single electron transistor made from a carbon nanotube bundle shows quasi-periodic Coulomb blockade oscillations as a function of gate-voltage. This suggests that carbon nanotubes can be used for single electron devices even if the specific electrical properties of individual nanotubes within the bundle are unknown.
