N2 - Based upon strain analysis around a growing crack tip by Finite Element Method, crack tip strain rate is evaluated in relation to crack propagation rate. FEM results show that a strain increment, DELTA delta , with crack extension, DELTA a, tend to have a value of unity when an incremental increase in load line displacement DELTA V//L with crack growth is small, which is a case for environmentally assisted cracking such as SCC, CF and SSRT. Therefore, the strain rate induced by crack advance is given by delta //c//r//a//c//k //t//i//p equals a/a//0 where a is a crack growth rate in an inert environment and a//0 is a numerical constant.
