A glow discharge emission spectrometry was used for the determination of tungsten in Fe-W binary alloys and some tungsten-containing commercial steels. An applied voltage modulation technique was useful to improve a signal-to-noise ratio of the recorded emission signals. This method can be suitable for a rapid and simple determination from less than 1% to 10% of tungsten. The spectral interferences, which were caused by Fe I, Ar I, or Ar II emission lines, were found to be very small if W I 429.5 nm was selected as an analytical line. Furthermore, the third element containing in these steels, such as Cr, Mo, or Co, provided no interferences on the results.
