A lot of research has been focused on high-speed multimedia local area networks (LAN) because low-speed variable-length packet LANs are not able to provide the performance and quality of service needed for multimedia communication. The research has centered on dual counterrotating ring local area networks (LAN) because the use of spatial reuse in dual ring LANs can result in a big increase in ring throughput and they are less susceptible to failure. The use of packet LANs in comparison with slot LANs for high-speed dual-ring LANs and the idea of semiglobal fairness and an algorithm for realizing such fairness are discussed.
