N2 - The effect of pretreatment with metallothionein (MT) inducing metal compounds (bismuth subnitrate (BSN) or ZnCl2) on survival rates of mice receiving various anticancer drugs was investigated. The survival rates of BSN-pretreated mice were 100, 63, 43, and 100% in cis-diamminedichloroplatinum, adriamycin, peplomycin, and 5-fluorouracil treated groups, respectively, although mice given an anticancer drug alone died within 13 days. Moreover, pretreatment with ZnCl2 remarkably reduced lethality of cyclophosphamide in addition to that of the other drugs described above. These results suggest that MT inducing agents may be effective as protective agents against certain side effects of various anticancer drugs
