Production of a Long Superconducting NbN Wire by the Sputtering Method

An attempt has been made to produce a long wire of superconducting NbN compound by a reactive sputtering technique using a cylindrical pure Nb target. Among various metal- and alloy-wire substrate materials examined, a tungsten wire showed the best properties. Jc of the specimen deposited on the W wire was improved by annealing at temperatures up to 1200K, and the best properties are Tc of 15.7K, Jc of 1.84×105A/cm2 at 10T and 1.15×103A/cm2 at 20T.
