Preparation of nickel carbide nanoparticles and their electrode catalytic activity on oxygen reduction reaction

This paper reports the synthesis of nickel carbide nanoparticles on a carbon carrier, using the liquid phase method, for application as an electrode catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The resulting nanoparticles showed electrode catalytic activity with an ORR onset potential of 0.36 V. The crystal structure of the nanoparticles could be modified by heat treatment, following which the onset potential achieved was 0.51 V. The change in electrical structure was a result of the change in crystal structure, leading to enhanced catalytic activity. Although the activity is lower than that of Pt, the required performance can be generated by increasing the number of cells.
