Preparation and mechanical properties of porous Ti-10 Mo alloy for biomedical applications

The porous Ti-10Mo alloys from elemental powders were fabricated by a powder metallurgy technique with ammonium bicarbonate as the space-holder. The effects of sintering process and space-holder content on the microstructure, porous characteristics and mechanical properties were studied. The results show that at the sintering temperature of 1300℃ the porous Ti-Mo alloys with uniform microstructure and pore distribution can be prepared, and the alloy exhibits a typical Widmanstatten structure. With the increase of the space-holder content, the pores become larger and the hole wall gets thinner. At or above 50 wt% of space-holder, pores are interconnected, forming a three-dimensional connectivity structure. When the space-holder content is in the range of 50%~60%, the alloys obtained show porosity of 62.8%~66.9% and pore sizes of 485.6~545.9 μm, and their elastic modulus and compressive yield strength vary from 2.9 to 1.3 GPa, and from 129.2 to 56.1 MPa, respectively.
