Possibility of substituting Cr by Mn in 6061 aluminum alloy evaluated by tear tests

6061 aluminum alloy contains small amounts of Cr (0.25mass%) in order to prevent grain coarsening or recrystarization. It is advantageous to reduce Cr contents in 6061 aluminum alloy. As the first step of unifying the compositions of aluminum alloys, the possibility of substituting Cr by Mn in 6061 aluminum alloy was investigated in this study. 6061 aluminum alloy, and Cr reduced and Mn added 6061 based aluminum alloys were prepared. The fracture toughness of these alloys were evaluated by tear tests. The fracture toughness of 6061 based aluminum alloy with adding Mn up to 0.4 mass % instead Cr is nearly equal to or greater than that of 6061 aluminum alloy. Cr will be able to substituted by Mn in 6061 aluminum alloy up to 0.4 mass %.
