Photoluminescence from semiconductor films in distributed feedback cavities

The photoluminescence (PL) from an exciton strongly coupled to a photon in the distributed feedback (DFB) cavity was studied. The sample consists of a grating substrate, a quantum well crystal as an active material and an overcoat film. The samples obtained may be considered as equidistant semiconductor arrays in a slab waveguide. For the sample with corrugation period of 0.72 μm, a PL peak was observed at 2.257 eV beside the exciton luminescence at 2.375 eV. As the corrugation period decreases, the peak shifts to the higher energy side but never exceeds the exciton energy. These energies correspond to the dip energies observed in the transmission spectra.
