We report the photo-oxidation method for preparing aqueous dispersions containing charge-photocontrollable cationic polystyrene particles with uniform diameter. The cationic polystyrene particles prepared by soap-free emulsion copolymerization had an average diameter of 195 nm and a zeta potential of +59 mV in aqueous solution containing 10 mmol/dm3 NaCI. When the aqueous dispersion containing the particles was irradiated with UV light, the zeta-potential was shifted negatively and the average diameter was maintained after UV exposure. FT-IR and elemental analysis suggested that carboxy groups were formed at a surface of the cationic polystyrene particles by photo-oxidation.
