Peening by the use of cavitation impacts for the improvement of fatigue strength

A rotating bending fatigue test on specimens with and without peening to demonstrate the improvement of the fatigue strength of samples peened by cavitation impacts induced by the cavitating jet was reported. Silicon manganese was used as a spring material and the residual stress was measured by X-ray diffraction methods. The fatigue strength of the peened specimen was about 120 MPa stronger than that of specimen not peened. The cavitation impacts induced by the cavitating jet was found to improve the fatigue strength of the silicon manganese steel.
