Ozone monitoring in the polar troposphere using a new diffusive sampler

A new diffusive sampler for ozone was tested and validated in the polar troposphere at Ny-Alesund-Svalbard Islands. Measurements from the ozone diffusive samplers were compared with those of a co-located ultraviolet analyser in Ny-Ålesund. The O3 measurements made with the diffusive sampler were in a very good agreement with the measurements from the analyser, giving a linear regression line with a slope of 1.00 and a correlation coefficient of 0.83. The ratio of a 4-weeks average concentration computed from the sum of 2 subsequent 2-weeks samples to the monthly sample were used to indicate the self-consistency of the method. Results obtained in 15 subsequent runs showed a very good agreement between the average of the fortnightly and the monthly samplers, giving an average ratio equal to 0.95 with a standard deviation of 0.11.
