A 74-year-old man undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment developed an infection of the deep portion of the right neck with secondary gas production that extended outside of the mandibular ramus and into the parapharyngeal space. We performed emergency neck drainage surgery and antibiotic therapy. Culture of the abscess contents showed anaerobic Streptococcus constel-latus and Prevotella buccae. Subsequent imaging revealed osteomyelitis of the mandible with cortical bone destruction as the probable cause of the deep neck abscess. Because the patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment are relatively immunocompromised, a multidis-ciplinary approach is often required for such patients with this type of infection.
