A cell concept for calciothermic reduction of titanium oxides in molten CaCl2 and the experimental tests for its verification are introduced. The thermochemical background of this concept and several cell designs have been proposed by Prof. Ono at Kyoto University and the authors' group, currently as known as OS process. All the titanium oxides such as TiO2 and TiO can be reduced by Ca to metallic Ti in a single CaCl2-CaO cell, where both the thermochemical reduction by Ca and the electrochemical decomposition of CaO for recycling work simultaneously. A few mol%Ca dissolves in the melt near the cathode as Ca, which plays as the media with a strong reducing power. Combining carbon anode and titanium basket-type cathode, titanium powder containing less than 2000ppm oxygen was produced from TiO2 powder. The mechanism of OS process was experimentally confirmed and some extensions to the other oxides or the sulfide were introduced for future study.
