Organic gas sorption by chemical-sensing fluoropolymer films prepared by radio-frequency sputtering

The organic gas sorption-desorption characteristics of a polychlorotrifluoroethylene-sputtered film, which involves a considerable number of dangling and unsaturated bonds, are analysed by using various spectroscopic and gravimetric techniques. Exposing the film to a hydrogen atmosphere increases the spin density through exothermic reconstruction of the film frameworks. The evaluation of the sorption characteristics of benzene and hexane, and of their perfluorocarbon derivatives, reveals that the film has a higher affinity for polarizable molecules like benzene than for non-polarizable molecules like n-hexane. These sorption characteristics are enhanced in the perfluorocarbon derivatives.
