The test material was ASTM A533 Grade B Steel for reactor pressure Toyohashi University of Technology, Toyohashi 440 Japan vessels. High tensile strength (80kgf/mm**2 class) steel HT80, mild steel (40kgf/mm**2 class) SS41 and aluminum alloys (7075 and 2017) were also used in various heat treated conditions. Dynamic fracture toughness characteristics for crack initiation and crack propagation were estimated using a pre-cracked Charpy type specimen and an instrumented Charpy test. An energy application larger than 3-fold of the absorbed energy is a necessary condition for accurately recording the load deflection curve. Utilization of side grooves will make it possible to obtain a valid J//I//d value with standard Charpy tests.
