To make clear the mechanism of catastrophic violent vibrations, the cavitation aspects, the detected accelerations and the acoustic pressure pulses associated with the violent vibrations were systematically observed in a water flow around a Clark Y 11. 7 hydrofoil at various cavitation numbers, angles of incidence and flow velocities. The violent vibrations are accompanied by periodic cavity separation on the hydrofoil of about 17-25 Hz frequency, while the acceleration waves and the pressure pulses beat with almost the same frequency, which is believed to be the beat frequency of the hydrofoil followed by the Karman vortices.
