Blast furnace operations with top gas recycling and/or plastics injection were examined by numerical modelling. Comparisons were made under the condition of constant hot metal temperature and constant thermal state of raceway combustion. The top gas recycling after CO2 scrubbing, combined with plastics injection, enhances concentration of reducing gas components due to their re-circulation and elimination of nitrogen inflow. This increase in reduction potential accelerates the reduction of iron bearing materials and thus improves the hot metal productivity and reduces the environmental impact of the blast furnace. The higher hydrogen level of the reducing gas relaxes the constraints on fluidization and flooding, thus allowing a potential further improvement of the hot metal productivity.
