Using an arc atmosphere controlling chamber, the effects of welding conditions and atmospheres on the nitrogen absorption of austenitic stainless steel weld metal during gas tungsten arc welding were studied in comparison with iron weld metal. The temperatures of the stainless steel weld metal decreased with increasing welding current. The nitrogen content increased with travel speed, while that of the iron weld metal did not. The nitrogen content of the stainless steel weld metal increased with nitrogen partial pressure at low nitrogen partial pressure and was constant at high nitrogen partial pressure in a nitrogen-argon gas atmosphere.
