Apolipoprotein E receptor 2 (apoER2) is a new member of the LDL-receptor family, predominantly expressed in the brain. We raised a monoclonal antibody to apoER2 and examined immunohistochemically hippocampal tissue from the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and controls. ApoER2 immunoreactivity was present exclusively in neurons. The staining intensity of neurons measured by an image analyzer, was significantly stronger in AD, but this was not correlated with allele dosage of apoE ε4. These results suggest that apoER2 is upregulated in hippocampal neurons within AD.
